Release Date: September 20th, 2019 (PC, Mac and Nintendo Switch), December 17th, 2019 (PS4, Xbox One) Developer: House House Publisher: Panic Composer: Dan Golding Designers: Nico Disseldorp, Stuart Gillespie-Cook, Jacob Strasser and Michael McMaster Price: $19.99 USD Date Reviewed: January 8, 2020 Platform reviewed on: PlayStation 4 Indie games have been something I enjoy most of the time, but ah a game we have here we see is a goose and untitled.. Before we begin on the review let’s begin on how the development of the title began, and much more on Untitled Goose Game shall we? Development of the Game As of looking into it mentions that the Untitled Goose Game originally began from a stock photograph of a goose that a House House employee had posted in the company’s internal communications. It had sparked about geese, but the idea was mostly put aside for a few months until they apparently realized that the photograph of the goose had much potential to become a fun game. The game being developed under House House cited on making the inspiration from Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 as they hoped it to be built upon where the Player would control this character running in a 3D environment, and from their last title “Push Me Pull You” it had 2D art with flat colors which they used low poly meshes, flat colors and untextured 3D models in the game. As the playable character of the game being “The Goose” was originally just a stock image and that non-playable humans would react towards its actions or sudden movements by also using an implemented system where these NPCs would tidy up something if an item was moved or being taken away from. After restricting the field of view of the NPCs and not get caught caused it to become a stealth game experience. Instead of it’s hidden remaining like the other Stealth type games they tried a mission referencing an Assassination kind of like Hitman series having certain targets but it was later on taken as a joke, and that one of the House House members “Jake Strasser” stated it had a setup and punchline. By removing the violence from it allowed it’s existence to become a joke. The team has opted for the English village as the game's main setting, as its acclaimed properness was seen as "the antithesis of what the goose was all about", according to developer Nico Disseldorp. The name of the title became Untitled Goose Game as a result of having to come up with a title as fast as possible when on learning that the game got accepted to be shown at the Fantastic Fest in Texas, and without any other ideas they used the title of the game-play video for the submission, which stuck since then. In 2017 they reveal it with a trailer as it gained a lot of viral popularity as Trailer was composed by Dan Golding as it featured musical passages from Claude Debussy’s preludes called Minstrels, with its reception towards the Trailer’s music House House, decided to include it on the game’s soundtrack as of them accomplishing it was to slice the versions of the Piano piece as for example the game would honestly, play the section of it quietly into 400 sections, and that these sections were based upon the intensity by only playing from what is happening in-game, and play originally if the Goose is being chased. Also to note it became House House’s project, and like their debut was supported by the Film Victoria who assisted the studio being set up properly. Following the initial trailer's release, Untitled Goose Game was present at the Game Developers Conference, PAX Australia, and PAX West (Prime) events in 2018, even in 2019 the game announced to become exclusive on the Epic Game Store as it elaborated their decision from part-time to full-time developers and the developing team is looking on to also add the game to mobile devices, etc.. Story, and etcThe game basically is a puzzle-stealth video game as its story basically begins in an idyllic English village in which a player controls this Goose which can honk, run, flap its wings, and grab items with its beak to bother most of the Villagers (NPCs) but the story is basically about a goose needing to stack his collection in a big hole he has. As the world is split into multiple areas that came in to reach them was the to-do list. The to-do list tells you what you are required to do before proceeding on to the next part of the game kind of like objectives until they are cleared you can continue your journey honking around the city but do know that there can be additional objectives you can do after finishing the game most likely, and even speed running them can be a real challenge through the game but make sure you beat them quick before the church bell rings or it could be tricking or stealing something from an NPC (Villager) into causing them to be bothered or annoyed. During, my time playing the title I enjoyed how much aesthetics they placed in the game, and how the Goose made the game very and to laugh at once awhile, even with the controls giving the player an option to “Honk” man it’s great honestly the tasks is my favorite part of the game, but the most important thing in the game would become the to-do list. The to-do list has some super creative and fun objectives, as it is quite frankly funny at sometimes in the game honking around at others. As of me playing it threw out, it gave more attention to Goat Simulator but better in my opinion with them both sharing the nature of create chaos. Sometimes at certain points, it can become repetitive, and shallow sometimes from being a truly engaging game. On certain notices on my issues was I’d somehow was grabbing something towards one of the Villagers they apparently were stuck in spinning motion when I’ve accidentally grabbed something.. Not sure what caused this to happen but it was sure hilarious, but sadly in certain times, my game crashed on one of the levels in the game but good to note I had cloud-save on the PlayStation 4 before crashed so that’s a relief from it. The real magic in between lies with some endless funny interactions, which there became an insidious joy increasing angry responses from the town’s people as well in their own way rudely but they’ve had it coming even though respecting its humor sensibility rarely tips over the lege right into some punchline most likely saying “Wow, aren’t you unfriendly?” toward (The Player) as the Goose. After the nonsense, the game did release and sell over 100,000 units within its two weeks of release on the Nintendo Switch, and it was noted of topping sales charts in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States even above one of mainline game Nintendo released on the exact day “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening”. Around the end of the 2019 Untitled Goose Game sold over 1 million units as it was a huge milestone for the indie title. The game even won the Breakthrough award at the “2019 Golden Joystick Awards” and other nominations so on. Verdict Developers of House House did a great job on making a title that made me smile through the game with some charming aspects they placed in through a charming and yet lovely aesthetic title for all to enjoy in the main coming generations of indie titles even though there are so many great indie titles out there, and this proves to become one of the best I’ve played so far, between with GRIS, and yes, sadly when I finished the game I didn’t stop playing and couldn’t eagerly stop honking it was too much fun.
Quote: “A title with much charmful symphony of music as a great indie title for all to enjoy” 8.0/10 Until then game on. -Tim/Timothy (TImthegamer12) About Timothy Stambaugh (TImthegamer12) Writer for Jack of All Controllers.
