While at it let’s talk about it and do note we played this game for almost 72 hours or more. THE TIME OF HOW BATTLE OF BIKINI BOTTOM BEGAN During the time of this game back in the frame the developers Heavy Iron Studios, AWE Games, and Vicarious Visions worked on Battle for Bikini Bottom which was known for being released on the Xbox, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Gameboy Advance and PC. There were differences between the PC and Gameboy Advance versions. The Gameboy Advance version had a different tone upon them taking more of a 2D type of platformer, and as well as the PC version sadly taking in a mini game compilation than being the same version as the Consoles which the Console version and GBA were the good ones in our personal perspectives which we can discuss soon. During the time of being in development Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom was released around October, 31st 2003 in the US and November 28th 2003 for the UK. While looking at the time here’s what the console versions were. Consoles (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube) According to Wikipedia and other sources the console version was 3D platformer collectathon requiring players to collect one of the three main types of items titled 'Shiny Objects' and which are the game's currency and can be used to pay tolls within game areas or to buy golden spatulas from Mr. Krabs even with Patrick having socks you are required to find around each level, and certain ones containing a certain amount of pictures collected or wheels. Gameboy Advance The Gameboy Advance version was Rather than being non-linear, like the home console versions but level-based. although still visiting most of the locations from the home console versions. Combat is very limited, done through blowing bubbles onto enemies to turn robots off or back on; robots cannot be permanently destroyed, as replacements will appear through a portal in their starting positions, so enemies are used to solve platforming challenges. SpongeBob can ride a seahorse named "Mystery" in certain levels. Like most of the GBA games of its era, it would use a password system rather than save files. It includes the Squidward Boss which isn’t in the Console Version but in the theater room where there was a concept of it on the Console version before it was scrapped even with Patrick’s Dream level. Even though the Gameboy Advance had the same plot as the Windows Version but the Gameboy had you doing unique puzzles for the characters you play as. Windows Version Mostly the Windows PC version was a series of mini games and greatly differed from the console versions. The game was mostly where Spongebob’s Friends were captured, and to free them you had to play multiple games while collecting objects, including a game show styled trivia where Spongebob must score 500 points to free a character from the cage, and then the player has a chance to control the freed character where they can locate more items and possibly battle the robots. If all collected (money, magic shop items, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's gadgets, SpongeBob's dressing clothes, and various pieces of a machine), Spongebob would return it back to their rightful owners. Even though the game on consoles had mixed or average reviews with it holding a 4.5 out of 5 by the Official PlayStation Magazine, IGN rating it around 7.3 out of 10 praising the sound, graphical style, and gameplay by quoting "While its generic collect, jump, and kill mechanics, the variety and general SpongeBob zaniness keep things fresh." Later through the time it earned Player’s Choice, Platinum Hit’s and Player’s Choice on the Gamecube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox respectfully. Through the years of time one day around after the game's release, it has gained a cult following, positive reappraisal from contemporary critics, and a large speedrunning presence, and Heavy Iron Studios being generous of having interest in a remake or sequel of the game as well as requests from the fans were asking for a remake. Nickelodeon announced that they were joining THQ Nordic to bring Spongebob back and many fans and speedrunners of the Battle for Bikini Bottom community hoped a remake was going to happen with it mentioning Spongebob Squarepants in the series list. Then one day around 2019 before E3 was coming up they announced Spongebob Squarepants Battle for Bikini Bottom was getting a remake titled Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated even with a Multiplayer Mode. And with the time of waiting we have the game to review and let’s get into it but do be warned there is gonna be spoilers of the plot of it. If you want to skip it then scroll down from the title “Main Plot of the Story”. The Main Plot of the Story (SPOILERS)The game is very much like the original explaining that during the night Plankton made a machine called The Duplicatotron 3000 which would produce an army of robots and be used to steal the Krusty Krab secret formula as he normally does in the show. After the robots were being created he then realized the Switch was on “Don’t Obey” as the Robots kicked Plankton out of the Chum Bucket before taking over Bikini Bottom. Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick were playing with toy robots and horses. SpongeBob was getting very bored with the toys and wishes he could play with possibly real robots. Patrick uses his so-called "magic wishing shell", believing it will make their wish come true the following morning. SpongeBob wakes up to find out that his house was trashed by real robots. While looking upon the Kitchen he receives a note from Mr. Krabs tells him he is now a “Shiny Object Collector” and would give him a golden spatula for every certain amount of Shiny Objects you bring him. Shiny Objects, and Golden Spatulas are going to be the main part of the game so do note that as they are used to buy or pay tolls to access certain areas or locations in the levels but you need to Find all of Patrick’s Socks that are scattered in the world to 100% the game. With all of that being said let’s begin talking about the games controls, aspects, lighting and much more in detail. The General and VerdictThe game is honestly very beautiful in lighting, design and the art even with the aspects coming through but the one thing to discuss is that the controls can be a bit clunky but after a while it can be something get over and something to master at some point but mostly the Keyboard and Mouse playing is a bit more frustrating when using a Cruise Bubble which seems a lot more easier on the Controller which we believe is more recommended to do as the camera and moving the cruise bubble is more consistent. There is a main menu where you can change the options and languages even though I did hear while back when they showed the game at gamescom the German voices were getting redone and from what I seen so far is amazing but sadly no luck on the US as Clancy Brown was known for being the voice of Mr. Krabs didn't get the chance but it didn't stop us. Manual Camera is alright but not as great in Spongebob’s Dream where you need to jump up and no ability to see down at all on where you're jumping at can be an issue which you can change to smart camera in the settings to pass it. I would say that it has the best lighting and art design through it all with the aspects honestly these levels I’ve seen.. Jellyfish Fields and Rock Bottom with you feeling like you're in this world and trying to put yourself into this game. While playing the main game and earning a 100% and defeating the final boss you would see all the characters in the Krusty Krab singing the shows Iconic Theme which we all know is Spongebob Squarepants! While getting into the Multiplayer mode it seems you also get to play more than just Spongebob, Patrick and Sandy… You get to also play Squidward, Gary, Mr. Krabs and Robot Plankton?!?!
In the mode you play one of the cut content Bosses which was Robot Squidward you fight between hordes of robots and dangerous electricity spikes as you jump island to island and waves including Patrick’s Dream in all full fledged combat and it’s very fun to play with friends or family in local co-op or online. The one thing we like to mention is that the game is super faithful to the original and that’s something we love to see, and did notice there were easter eggs of references in the shows between the seasons and new ones even though the game was based upon the first couples of seasons. Now let’s talk about what was good and bad and our conclusion. The Goods: Lighting, Art Style, Story, Keeping it faithful and original as the classic, Multiplayer mode (Horde Mode) is very fun and kinda awesome to see other characters playable besides Spongebob, Patrick and Sandy, Redesigns of the Robot Sandy and Patrick look Awesome. The Bad: Some areas are buggy and glitchy here and there but can be managed by resetting the game, clunky controls, players may feel like the cut content should’ve been in the main story, wished Horde Mode was longer, more stable servers in Horde Mode in certain countries, wished the Flying Dutchman, Prawn and King Jellyfish had more Health. As we say again the game is super faithful to the original and has some bugs and issues but Purple Lamp Studios has been working hard to come out and fix this with one patch at a time. Well done Purple Lamp Studios on a Faithful and yet fun Platformer based on a TV Show Remake. Do we recommend the game? Yeah for sure for it being $30 in general it's worth every penny unless you are a big fan of the show the Shiny and F.U.N Edition is for you. 8.5/10 Quote: “A Very Faithful Remake with a Comedic Charm” Till Then.. GAME ON! -Timothy Stambaugh (Tim/Timthegamer12) -Alexandre Elkhoury (Alex)
